MPO and armoured fibre assemblies for UK buyers

The reaction-to-fire classes, installation codes and import steps that shape a UK order for fibre assemblies made in India.

In short

UK buyers specify installed fibre cable by its Euroclass reaction-to-fire rating under BS EN 50575, and BS 6701 sets Dca-s2,d2,a2 as the minimum for telecommunications cabling in buildings. Write the full class, the LSZH requirement, fibre type, polarity and lengths into the RFQ. Radix Fibrotech in Pune prices UK enquiries; ask for test reports and origin documents with the quote.

Euroclass ratings on UK fibre cable specifications

Great Britain kept the Construction Products Regulation in domestic law after leaving the EU, so cable permanently installed in a building is still classified for reaction to fire under BS EN 50575, with the classes defined in BS EN 13501-6. BS 6701, the UK code for installing telecommunications cabling, makes Dca-s2,d2,a2 the minimum class for such cable. Consultants and fire engineers often ask for more than the minimum, and the class they write is the one your supplier must price.

Class stringWhat it tells youWhere UK specifications tend to use it
B2ca-s1a,d1,a1Very low heat release, the lowest smoke sub-class, limited droplets, low acidityProjects whose fire strategy demands the smallest cable contribution, such as some transport and high-rise schemes
Cca-s1b,d1,a1Limited heat release and flame spread, low smoke and acidityA frequent choice for data centres and larger commercial buildings
Dca-s2,d2,a2Moderate performance, the BS 6701 floorGeneral office and commercial cabling where nothing higher is asked for
EcaPasses the single-cable flame test onlyBelow the BS 6701 minimum, so not suitable for installed building cabling

The suffixes matter as much as the letter. The s rating covers smoke (s1a is the best, then s1b, s1, s2, s3), d covers flaming droplets (d0 to d2), and a covers acidity of the fire gases (a1 to a3). Write the full string, for example Cca-s1b,d1,a1, because Cca alone leaves the smoke and acidity open.

LSZH habits and where the regulation stops

UK specifications have asked for low smoke zero halogen sheaths (often written LS0H) for decades, citing BS EN 60754 for halogen and acid gas and BS EN 61034 for smoke density. LSZH is still a separate requirement from the Euroclass: a cable can be halogen-free and only reach Eca, so ask for both on the same line.

The regulation applies to cable for permanent installation. Short patch cords inside a rack are commonly treated as outside its scope, yet many UK data centre operators require the same class or at least LSZH throughout the hall. Check the client specification before choosing the jacket for MTP/MPO patch cords, since a mismatch is easier to fix at quotation than on site.

Standards cited on UK cabling drawings

Design documents usually reference BS EN 50173 for generic cabling, BS EN 50174 for installation planning and practice, and BS EN 50600 for data centre facilities. Fibre grades follow the OM and OS naming used across IEC and EN documents, and the comparison of OM3, OM4 and OM5 explains which grade suits which link length. MPO polarity is still often described with the A, B and C method names familiar from TIA documents, so draw the fibre map rather than relying on the method letter alone.

Which UK sectors buy these assemblies

  • Data centres, concentrated west of London and around the M25, order MPO trunks, high-density patch cords and breakouts.
  • Broadcast and live events, from outside broadcast units to touring productions, use SMPTE hybrid camera cable, opticalCON connectors and tactical reels. The broadcast industry page lists the assembly types involved.
  • Defence programmes issue drawings that may cite Defence Standards (Def Stan) alongside international connector specifications.
  • North Sea oil and gas and offshore wind need harsh-environment assemblies that tolerate salt spray, vibration and wide temperature swings.

UK customs, VAT and trade terms

The UK importer needs an EORI number beginning with GB, and the import declaration is made through HMRC's Customs Declaration Service, normally by a customs agent. Goods are classified with a ten-digit commodity code under the UK Global Tariff; ask your agent to confirm it, since fibre assemblies can sit in different headings depending on construction. Import VAT at the standard rate of 20% applies, and VAT-registered businesses can use postponed VAT accounting to settle it on their return.

Expect the agent to ask for the commercial invoice, packing list, a certificate of origin and the air waybill or bill of lading. India and the UK signed a trade agreement in 2025; once it applies, ask your agent whether a preferential rate is available for your commodity code and which proof of origin it requires.

Radix quotes export orders from Pune on Incoterms agreed in the quotation. FCA Pune or CPT to a UK airport are common choices. DDP would need the seller to act as UK importer with its own registrations, so most buyers keep import clearance on their side.

Working hours and what to send

IST runs 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT and 4 hours 30 minutes ahead of British Summer Time. The Radix working day (09:00 to 18:00 IST) therefore covers 03:30 to 12:30 in a UK winter and 04:30 to 13:30 in summer, so a UK morning call reaches the Pune team during its afternoon.

A UK RFQ should state the full Euroclass string and LSZH requirement, fibre grade, fibre count and MPO gender at each end, the polarity drawing, lengths in metres with tolerance, labelling, packaging and the Incoterm. If the cable is for permanent installation, ask for the cable maker's Declaration of Performance. The step-by-step RFQ guide lists further details buyers often forget, and the quote request page takes drawings and BOMs directly.

Questions buyers ask

Does BS 6701 apply to fibre patch cords in a rack?

BS 6701 and the reaction-to-fire regulation focus on cable permanently installed in the building. Patch cords are often treated as outside that scope, but many operators still demand the same class or LSZH. Follow the client specification.

Is an LSZH cable automatically Cca rated?

No. LSZH describes the sheath material and its smoke and halogen behaviour, while Cca is a classification from a fire test of the finished cable. Specify both, with the full s, d and a suffixes.

Who issues the Declaration of Performance for a fibre cable?

The manufacturer of the bulk cable issues the Declaration of Performance for the class it has declared. An assembly maker using that cable can pass it on, so ask for it by cable type in the quote.

Does the India and UK trade agreement remove duty on fibre assemblies?

That depends on whether the agreement applies on your import date and on the tariff schedule for your commodity code. Ask your customs agent, who will also tell you which origin statement the supplier must provide.

What is the best time for a call from the UK to Pune?

Between 08:00 and 12:00 UK time falls inside the Pune working day all year round. Send drawings by email beforehand so the call can cover specific questions.
