In short

A harsh environment cable reel stores and deploys cable in conditions where ordinary reels fail. The Radix range centres on backpack cable reels: light enough to carry for hours, with adjustable straps, manual deployment, quick winding and coatings against rust and dust. They are made in custom sizes for defence, broadcast, video production and live events.

What these reels are for

Cable reels make it easier to carry, deploy and store cable. In the field, a heavy or awkward reel slows the crew down and breaks under rough handling. The harsh environment cable drums and reels are built for defence use and for other rough sites, in heat, dust, sudden rain and freezing cold. They are light and portable: a crew member can sling one on the shoulders and walk the cable out, on a hillside shoot or at an offshore site.

Backpack cable reels

The main type is the backpack cable reel, worn like a backpack so the cable pays out as the operator walks. Stated features:

  • Ergonomic, portable design, light enough to carry for hours.
  • Manual cable deployment with easy pull and quick winding.
  • Quick setup in the field.
  • Adjustable straps.
  • Durable material with coatings against rust, dust and damage.
  • Custom sizes: small, large and extra-large cable capacities.
  • Low maintenance.

Where they are used

Military zones, broadcasting, video production and live events, and work in fields, factories and on ships. Reels pair naturally with tactical fibre cable reels and the cables described in the tactical fibre optic cable guide.

Questions buyers ask

What type of reels are offered?

The main type is the backpack cable reel, carried on the back with adjustable straps. Sizes are made to suit small, large and extra-large cable lengths.

Are the reels suitable for military use?

Yes. They are built for defence and other harsh sites, in heat, dust, rain and cold, with coatings that resist rust and damage.

Can the reel be supplied with cable?

Tell us the cable you need and whether it should be fitted and terminated. Radix makes fibre and copper cable assemblies that can be supplied on the reel.

Are the reels heavy to carry?

No. They are designed to be light enough to carry for hours, with adjustable straps so the load sits comfortably on the back.

How much maintenance do the reels need?

Very little. Keep the winding mechanism clear of grit and store reels dry between uses.
