What an MTP OM3 48-fibre patch cord is
An MTP OM3 48-fibre patch cord packs 48 fibre strands into one cable, with MTP multi-fibre connectors at the ends. One cord replaces dozens of single-fibre or duplex cords, which keeps racks clear, makes cable management easier and shortens installation time. The cords are pre-terminated and plug-and-play, so there is no field termination.
OM3 is a laser-optimised 50/125 micron multimode fibre. It is widely used for 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps links in data centres. The MPO cable guide explains how multi-fibre connectors work.
Stated features
- 48 fibres in each cable, giving 48 lanes for data.
- Data rates from 10 Gbps to 40 Gbps.
- Push-pull locking connectors for high-density panels.
- Colour-coded, lightweight and compact cable.
- Low signal loss and quick installation.
OM3 reach at 10G and 40G
Reach depends on the application standard as well as the fibre grade. The values below are the published IEEE 802.3 reaches for OM3, not Radix figures.
| Application | Fibres used | OM3 reach |
|---|---|---|
| 10GBASE-SR | 2 | 300 m |
| 40GBASE-SR4 | 8 | 100 m |
If you need longer 40G links or plan to move to 100G, compare grades in OM3 vs OM4 vs OM5.
What to specify in your quote
- Length and quantity.
- Connector arrangement at each end, and whether each connector is pinned or unpinned.
- Polarity method (A, B or C). See the MPO polarity guide.
- Jacket rating and colour, and any labelling.

Questions buyers ask
What does OM3 mean?
OM3 is a grade of 50/125 micron multimode fibre optimised for laser sources. It supports 10 Gbps to 300 m and 40 Gbps to 100 m under the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards.
Why use a 48-fibre MTP cord instead of duplex cords?
One 48-fibre cord replaces many duplex cords, which saves rack space, reduces tangling and cuts installation time. The connectors are factory terminated, so the cord plugs straight in.
Can I get custom lengths and configurations?
Yes. Radix makes 48-fibre MTP cords to the customer's length, polarity, connector gender and labelling requirements.
What is an MTP connector?
MTP is a multi-fibre push-pull connector that joins many fibres at once through a precision MT ferrule. It belongs to the MPO family and mates with standard MPO connectors. Our MTP vs MPO guide covers the differences.
Where are these cords used?
They suit data centres, telecom rooms, large office and IT networks, and high-speed backbone links where many fibres must be connected in a small space.
