What a SMPTE hybrid cable is
A broadcast camera needs to send video to the control room and receive power, return video, talkback and control from it. A SMPTE hybrid cable does all of this in one run, combining optical fibres for the signals with copper conductors for power and control. That replaces a bundle of separate cables and shortens setup time. Because the signals travel on fibre, the cable runs far beyond the reach of copper video cable and is not affected by electrical interference.
The industry construction is set out in SMPTE standards for the hybrid cable and its connector. The SMPTE hybrid cable guide covers the fibres, conductors and connector in detail.
Stated features
- Cable-mount, camera-to-CCU connection cable.
- Suitable for permanent installation in building risers and studios, and for outdoor use.
- Combines light, electricity and control signals in one cable.
- Stainless steel construction against wear.
- Rubber protective caps keep the connector clean.
- Supports signals from 19.4 Mbps to 3 Gbps.
- Standard length 100 m, up to 500 m to order.
Care of the connector
The fibre contacts inside a SMPTE connector are the most sensitive part of the link. Keep the rubber caps fitted whenever the cable is unplugged, cap the two ends together on the reel, and clean the fibre contacts before each connection. Contamination is the most common cause of a camera link that suddenly drops.
What to specify in your quote
- Camera and CCU models, so the connector type and gender match.
- Length: 100 m standard, or a custom length up to 500 m.
- Use: permanent riser or studio installation, or field and outdoor broadcast.
- Whether you need a reel, and any panel-mount receptacles for the studio end.
