What a fibre to SDI converter does
SDI on coaxial cable loses quality as the run gets longer, and the higher the data rate, the shorter the usable reach. A fibre to SDI converter solves this by converting the SDI signal to light. Fibre carries it over long distances with no loss of picture quality and no electrical interference, and a second unit converts it back to SDI at the far end.
The Radix converter is designed to be portable and durable, for camera crews, video producers and live event teams working away from a fixed studio.
Stated features
- Bidirectional: camera to studio and studio to camera.
- SFP optical fibre socket supporting input and output.
- One SDI in and one SDI out, compatible with 12G, HD and SD-SDI.
- Works with HD-SDI and SD equipment in studios and in the field.
- 4K video including DCI 4K25 and UHD 4K60.
- Stable signal free of electrical interference.
Planning a fibre SDI link
Because the converter uses an SFP socket, the SFP module sets the fibre type and reach. Single-mode modules cover long distances; multimode modules suit shorter runs. Both ends must use matching modules and the same fibre type. The single-mode vs multimode guide explains the choice, and a fibre loss budget confirms the link will work before you go on site.
For the fibre itself, Radix also makes tactical and armoured cables on reels for field deployment.
What to specify in your quote
- Number of converter pairs.
- SDI format: 12G, 3G, HD or SD.
- Fibre type and the distance between the two ends.
- The connector on the fibre you already own, or whether you need fibre cable supplied.
- Power arrangement available at each end.

Questions buyers ask
Is the fibre SDI converter bidirectional?
Yes. The SFP optical socket supports input and output, so the converter works from SDI to fibre and from fibre to SDI.
Is it portable?
Yes. It is designed to be easy to transport for crews working at different locations.
What video formats does it support?
12G, HD and SD-SDI, including UHD 4K60 and DCI 4K25.
How far can a fibre SDI link run?
Reach depends on the SFP module and the fibre type rather than on the converter. Single-mode modules are used for the longest runs. Tell us the distance and fibre you plan to use, and we will match the module.
Who uses fibre SDI converters?
Video production teams, live event crews, TV studios and news broadcasters who need to send camera signals over long distances.
